Bicentralizer

The bicentralizer B(M,phi) of a von Neumann algebra with a faithful normal state is the set of a in M that asymptotically commute with every uniformly bounded sequence (w_n) asymptotically centralizing the state in predual norm. More explicitly, its defining implication is

 ||w_nphi-phiw_n||_(M_*)->0==>aw_n-w_na->0 strongly.

The module conventions are (wphi)(y)=phi(yw) and (phiw)(y)=phi(wy). For a tracial state, every bounded sequence centralizes the state, so the bicentralizer is the center of M. The bicentralizer conjecture asks for B(M,phi)=C1 for type III_1 factors with separable predual.
