Predual

A predual of a Banach space X is a Banach space Y together with an isometric identification of X with the continuous dual Y^*. The identification defines the weak-star topology on X by pointwise convergence on Y. A predual need not exist for every Banach space, and a Banach space can admit different preduals. A von Neumann algebra M has its canonical predual M_* of normal linear functionals. For M_n(C), trace pairing identifies this predual with matrices carrying the trace norm. Separable predual is the countability assumption used in the continuous-core and bicentralizer statements.
