Modular Automorphism Group

The modular automorphism group of a von Neumann algebra M with a faithful normal state phi is the one-parameter group

 sigma_t^phi(x)=Delta_phi^(it)xDelta_phi^(-it),

where Delta_phi is the modular operator in the standard Hilbert-space representation. It is constructed from the polar decomposition of the closure of xphi^(1/2)|->x^*phi^(1/2). The fixed algebra M_phi is the centralizer of the state. For a faithful tracial state, the modular automorphism group is trivial. For M=M_n(C) and phi(x)=Tr(Dx) with positive invertible D of trace 1, it is sigma_t^phi(x)=D^(it)xD^(-it). The continuous core retains this modular action by forming a crossed product.
