Operator Algebra State

An operator algebra state on a unital C^*-algebra A is a positive linear functional phi:A->C with phi(1)=1. It is faithful when phi(a^*a)=0 implies a=0. For a von Neumann algebra, a state is normal when it preserves suprema of bounded increasing nets of positive elements. Equivalently, it belongs to the canonical predual. For example, phi(a)=Tr(rhoa) on M_n(C) is a state whenever rho is positive semidefinite and Trrho=1. It is faithful precisely when rho is positive definite. Faithful normal states define modular automorphism groups and bicentralizers.
