Fuchsian Group

A Fuchsian group is a subgroup Gamma of the projective special linear group PSL_2(R) that is discrete in the inherited topology. Its elements act on the upper half-plane H by Möbius transformations

 z|->(az+b)/(cz+d),

where a,b,c,d in R and ad-bc=1. The matrices A and -A define the same transformation. These transformations are isometries of the hyperbolic plane preserving its manifold orientation (Voight 2021, p. 642).

Conjugation by the conformal mapping z|->(z-i)/(z+i) gives the equivalent action on the unit disk (Voight 2021, p. 688). If Gamma is a torsion-free group, its quotient space H/Gamma is a Riemann surface, and the projection H->H/Gamma is its universal cover, with deck transformation group Gamma. Every compact Riemann surface of genus g>1 arises this way (Voight 2021, pp. 642-643).
