Calogero-Sutherland Model

A Calogero-Sutherland model is an exactly solvable many-variable eigenvalue problem for a Schrödinger operator with singular pair interactions. The rational model with harmonic confinement has quantum Hamiltonian

 H_R=-1/2sum_(i=1)^N(partial^2)/(partialx_i^2)+(omega^2)/2sum_(i=1)^Nx_i^2+lambda(lambda-1)sum_(1<=i<j<=N)1/((x_i-x_j)^2),
(1)

where N>=2 and omega>0. For lambda>=1 on the region x_1<...<x_N, choose the collision behavior proportional to (x_j-x_i)^lambda. The unnormalized ground state and its eigenvalue are

psi_0(x)=e^(-omegasum_(i)x_i^2/2)product_(i<j)(x_j-x_i)^lambda
(2)
E_0=omega/2[N+lambdaN(N-1)].
(3)

Put X=N^(-1/2)sum_(i)x_i and R^2=sum_(i)x_i^2-X^2. A family of eigenfunctions is

 psi_(nm)(x)=psi_0(x)H_m(sqrt(omega)X)L_n^a(omegaR^2),
(4)

where H_m is a Hermite polynomial, L_n^a is an associated Laguerre polynomial, a=(N-3)/2+lambdaN(N-1)/2, and m and n are nonnegative integers. These satisfy

 H_Rpsi_(nm)=[E_0+omega(m+2n)]psi_(nm).
(5)
CalogeroSutherlandEigenfunctions

Illustrated above are the signed eigenfunctions for N=3, lambda=2, omega=1, m=0, and n=0, 1, and 2, restricted to X=0 and scaled independently for display. The relative coordinates are

u=(x_2-x_1)/(sqrt(2))
(6)
v=(2x_3-x_1-x_2)/(sqrt(6)),
(7)

so R^2=u^2+v^2. Blue and orange indicate positive and negative values. The three collision lines u=0 and u=+/-sqrt(3)v are zeros of the common prefactor, and the radial zeros of the associated Laguerre polynomial give the nodal circles.

The case omega=1 is the Hermite-Laguerre example in Trott (2006), following Song and Park (2002). More general eigenfunctions have multivariate Hermite polynomials as polynomial factors (Gonera et al. 1999, Desrosiers et al. 2003).

The trigonometric model on a circle is also called the Sutherland model. In angular coordinates, one normalization is

 H_S=-sum_(i=1)^N(partial^2)/(partialtheta_i^2)+(lambda(lambda-1))/2sum_(i<j)sin^(-2)((theta_i-theta_j)/2).
(8)

With Phi_0=product_(i<j)|2sin[(theta_i-theta_j)/2]|^lambda, z_i=e^(itheta_i), and E_0^((S))=lambda^2N(N^2-1)/12, a family of eigenfunctions is

 Psi_kappa=Phi_0P_kappa^((1/lambda))(z_1,...,z_N),
(9)

where P_kappa^((1/lambda)) is a Jack polynomial in the monic normalization and kappa is a partition with at most N parts. Their eigenvalues are

 E_kappa=E_0^((S))+sum_(i=1)^N[kappa_i^2+lambda(N+1-2i)kappa_i].
(10)

This connects the integrable system to the differential equation for Jack polynomials (Lapointe and Vinet 1996).
