Algebraic Correspondence

An algebraic correspondence between algebraic varieties X and Y is an algebraic cycle on their product X×Y. For smooth projective complex varieties, a codimension-r correspondence Z acts on rational cohomology by

 Z_*x=(p_Y)_*(cl(Z) union p_X^*x),

where p_X and p_Y are the projections and cl is the cycle class. It sends H^k(X,Q) to H^(k+2r-2dimX)(Y,Q), with the corresponding Tate twist for Hodge structures. The graph of a morphism is an example. Realizing a particular cohomological map by such a cycle is stronger than merely knowing that the map preserves Hodge types.
