Spectral Pinching

The spectral pinching of a matrix B by a Hermitian matrix A with spectral decomposition A=sum_(lambda)lambdaP_lambda is

 E_A(B)=sum_(lambda)P_lambdaBP_lambda,

where the sum is over the distinct eigenvalues of A and the P_lambda are its orthogonal projections (Bhatia 1997). Thus pinching preserves each diagonal block associated with an eigenspace of A and removes the other blocks. Repeated eigenvalues retain entire blocks, rather than only diagonal entries. The map E_A is linear, preserves the matrix trace, satisfies E_A(E_A(B))=E_A(B), and produces a matrix that commutes with A.

Dinh et al. (2026) represented the trace change caused by pinching using a positive measure on the plane. For Hermitian matrices A,B and D=E_A(B), there is a positive measure zeta_(A,B) with compact support such that

 Trf(xA+yB)-Trf(xA+yD)=y^2int_(R^2)f^('')(xa+yb)dzeta_(A,B)(a,b)

for real x,y and twice continuously differentiable real functions f. The total mass is zeta_(A,B)(R^2)=||B-D||_F^2/2, where || ||_F is the Frobenius norm (Dinh et al. 2026). This representation yields the pinching refinement discussed in the Bessis-Moussa-Villani conjecture.

Dinh et al. (2026) report using ChatGPT for mathematical calculations, exploration, and checking arguments, with the framework directed and the results verified by the authors.
