Orbifold Fundamental Group

An orbifold fundamental group is the fundamental group defined using orbifold charts, which retains local stabilizer information along singular strata. For a smooth connected complex variety X with a smooth connected divisor D assigned finite multiplicity m, the root-orbifold group is

 pi_1^(orb)(X,(1-1/m)D)=pi_1(X\D)/<<gamma^m>>,

where gamma is a meridian about D and the double brackets denote its normal closure. Unlike the ordinary group of X, this quotient can retain a nontrivial meridian of finite order.
