Orbifold

An orbifold is a space locally modeled on a quotient of a manifold by a finite group, with compatible quotient charts.

It need not be a single global quotient. For a smooth complex variety X with a smooth divisor D, an order-m root orbifold has local chart z_1=w_1^m normal to D, with the cyclic group acting on w_1. Its fundamental group is obtained from pi_1(X\D) by requiring the meridian's mth power to be trivial.
