Normal Closure

The normal closure of a subset S of a group G is the smallest normal subgroup of G containing S. It is generated by all conjugates gsg^(-1) with g in G and s in S, and is denoted <<S>> (Brown 1982). The quotient G/<<S>> imposes the relations s=1 for all s in S.

For a singleton containing the identity element, the normal closure is trivial. For a group presentation, the normal closure of its relators in the free group gives the kernel of the map onto the presented group.
