Minkowski Product

The Minkowski product of two sets A,B subset= C is the set

 A tensor B={ab:a in A,b in B},

where ab is the usual complex multiplication. The two factors are chosen independently. The operation is commutative and associative, but in general it satisfies only A tensor (B+C) subset= (A tensor B)+(A tensor C), where + denotes the Minkowski sum (Farouki et al. 2001, pp. 284-285). For example, if A={-1,1} and B=C={1}, then A tensor (B+C)={-2,2}, while (A tensor B)+(A tensor C)={-2,0,2}.

Even when both operands are convex sets, their product need not be a convex set. For the line segment A={1+it:-1<=t<=1},

 A tensor A={x+iy:-2<=y<=2,1-y^2/4<=x<=2-|y|}.

Indeed, (1+is)(1+it)=1-st+i(s+t), and for fixed y=s+t the possible products satisfy |y|-1<=st<=y^2/4. The points 2i and -2i belong to the product, but their midpoint does not. The image {z^2:z in A} is only the part of the parabola x=1-y^2/4 with -2<=y<=2.

Writing a=u+iv and b=s+it gives the real equations x=us-vt and y=ut+vs for x+iy=ab. If A and B are semialgebraic sets, these equations express membership in A tensor B using existential quantifiers. Quantifier elimination therefore gives a semialgebraic set description of the product (Trott 2006).
