Milnor Number

The Milnor number of a holomorphic function germ f:(C^(n+1),0)->(C,0) with an isolated critical point is the complex dimension of its Jacobian algebra,

 mu(f,0)=dimC(O_(C^(n+1),0))/((partialf/partialx_0,...,partialf/partialx_n)).

The denominator is the ideal generated by its partial derivatives. The nearby Milnor fiber has the homotopy type of a bouquet of mu spheres of real dimension n. For f=x_0^2+...+x_n^2, the number is 1, while x^a+y^b has Milnor number (a-1)(b-1) for integers a,b>=2.

The mu-constant problem asks whether keeping this number fixed in a family also keeps the defining function topologically unchanged. Constancy of multiplicity is a different assertion from this ambient topological triviality.
