Hyperbolicity Cone

The closed hyperbolicity cone of a hyperbolic polynomial p with respect to e in R^m is the set of x in R^m for which every root of t|->p(te-x) is nonnegative. Writing these roots as lambda_1(x), ..., lambda_d(x) gives

 Lambda_+(p,e)={x in R^m:lambda_j(x)>=0 for every j}.

It is a closed set and a convex cone (Netzer and Sanyal 2015). For the determinant p(X)=detX on real symmetric matrices and e=I, the identity matrix, the roots are the eigenvalues of X, so the cone set consists of the positive semidefinite matrices.
