Group Cohomology

The group cohomology H^n(G,M) of a group G with coefficients in a left G-module M is the nth right derived functor of the invariant-module functor M|->M^G. Here M is an Abelian group with an additive G-action, and M^G is its subgroup of group fixed points.

In low dimensions, H^0(G,M)=M^G. The cohomology group H^1(G,M) is the quotient group of maps d:G->M satisfying d(gh)=d(g)+gd(h) under pointwise addition, modulo the subgroup of maps d(g)=gm-m for a fixed m in M. These are called derivations and principal derivations, respectively (Weibel 1994, pp. 174-175). The cohomology group H^2(G,M) classifies equivalence classes of group extensions of G by the additive Abelian group M that induce the specified G-action on M. The equivalences induce the identity on both M and G (Weibel 1994, p. 183).
