Dirichlet-to-Neumann Operator

A Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator maps prescribed boundary values of a solution of a partial differential equation to its outward normal flux. For the conductivity equation del ·(gammadel u)=0 on a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary Omega, it is Lambda_gammaf=gammapartial_nuu|_(partialOmega), where u|_(partialOmega)=f and nu is the outward unit normal vector (Sylvester and Uhlmann 1987).

For a bounded measurable coefficient with 0<c<=gamma<=C, the operator is defined weakly by

 <Lambda_gammaf,g>=int_Omegagammadel u_f·del v_gdx,

where u_f is the weak solution with boundary value f and v_g is any extension of g. The weak equation makes the value independent of that extension. The pairing is between the boundary Sobolev spaces H^(-1/2) and H^(1/2).

For gamma=1, this maps data for the Dirichlet problem for the Laplacian to Neumann boundary conditions. Recovering gamma from Lambda_gamma is Calderón's inverse problem.

A corresponding boundary measurement operator can be defined for a connection Laplacian d_A^(*g)d_A on a Hermitian vector bundle over a Riemannian manifold.
