Stress Tensor

The stress tensor describes the traction across oriented surfaces in a continuum. In the convention used here, a unit normal nu gives traction sigmanu. For linear isotropic elasticity with displacement u, its constitutive relation is

 sigma=lambda(del ·u)I+2mue(u),

where e(u) is the infinitesimal strain tensor and lambda,mu are the Lamé coefficients. In the absence of a body force, static equilibrium requires del ·sigma=0. Boundary displacement-to-traction data define the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of this system.
