Algebraic K-Theory

Algebraic K-theory associates Abelian groups K_n(R) to a unit ring R to study its projective modules and their higher relations. The group K_0(R) is the Grothendieck group of the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules, with direct sum as the operation. Thus [P direct sum Q]=[P]+[Q] in K_0(R) (Weibel 2013).

Writing GL(R)= union _(m>=1)GL_m(R) under the inclusions A|->diag(A,1), the group K_1(R) is its abelianization. Higher groups can be defined by homotopy groups of an associated space. For a field k, K_0(k)=Z via vector space dimension, and K_1(k)=k^× via the determinant.

The Gersten conjecture concerns the maps from K_n(R) to the K-groups of the residue fields of a regular local ring.
