Wilkinson Matrix

A Wilkinson matrix is a symmetric matrix used to test eigenvalue computations. The odd-order tridiagonal matrix W_(2m+1)^+ has entries

 w_(ij)={|i-m-1| if i=j; 1 if |i-j|=1; 0 otherwise
(1)

for 1<=i,j<=2m+1 (Wilkinson 1965, p. 308; Higham 1995, p. 67). Its eigenvalues are distinct, but some occur in extremely close pairs. This family is different from Wilkinson's examples of large element growth in Gaussian elimination.

For W_(21)^+, write the eigenvalues in increasing order as lambda_1<...<lambda_(21). The plot shows the gaps lambda_(2j+1)-lambda_(2j) for 1<=j<=10. High-precision arithmetic resolves the closest pairs, which may be indistinguishable at machine precision.
