Vieta Jumping

Vieta jumping is a method for studying Diophantine equations by replacing one integer polynomial root of a quadratic equation by its other polynomial root, using Vieta's formulas. It is often combined with infinite descent (Medrano Martín del Campo 2021, Numberphile 2025). For fixed y, suppose the equation has the form

 x^2-A(y)x+B(y)=0,

where A(y) and B(y) are integers. If x is an integer polynomial root, then x^'=A(y)-x is another integer polynomial root, and xx^'=B(y). Positivity and a strict decrease of the chosen size must be established separately when using this replacement for infinite descent.

For example, fix an integer k>=3 and consider

 x^2+y^2=kxy+1.

For a solution in positive integers with x>=y, the other polynomial root is x^'=ky-x=(y^2-1)/x>=0. The quadratic polynomial evaluated at x=y is (2-k)y^2-1<0, so x^'<y<x. Replacing (x,y) by (y,x^') therefore decreases the larger coordinate until the boundary solution (1,0) is reached. When y=1, the last positive solution before this boundary is (k,1).

Reversing these steps gives all solutions in nonnegative integers, up to interchange of the coordinates. They are (u_(n+1),u_n) for n>=0, where u_0=0, u_1=1, and the recurrence equation is u_(n+1)=ku_n-u_(n-1) for n>=1. The solutions with both coordinates positive correspond to n>=1.
