Quadratic Polynomial

A quadratic polynomial is a polynomial of polynomial degree 2. A univariate polynomial of this polynomial degree has the form f(x)=a_2x^2+a_1x+a_0 with a_2!=0. An equation involving a quadratic polynomial is called a quadratic equation. A closed-form solution known as the quadratic formula exists for the solutions of an arbitrary quadratic equation.

For the monic polynomial f(x)=x^2+bx+a with real coefficients, the polynomial discriminant is b^2-4a. There is at least one real root iff b^2-4a>=0, and two distinct real roots iff b^2-4a>0. If both roots are real, then the coefficients satisfy the sharp inequality

 a+b+1<=9/4max(a,b,1),

where max denotes the maximum. Equality holds iff (a,b)=(1/4,1) or (a,b)=(4,4), corresponding to f(x)=(x+1/2)^2 and f(x)=(x+2)^2, respectively. Thus the constant 9/4 cannot be decreased (Moser and Pounder 1962; Dixon 1962, p. 259; Trott 2006).
