Total Degree

The total degree of a polynomial is the largest sum of exponents in any of its nonzero monomials. For example, x^2y^3+x^4 has total degree 5, although its degree in x is 4 and its degree in y is 3. For a univariate polynomial, total degree agrees with polynomial degree. A nonzero constant has total degree 0.
