Energy-Momentum Tensor

An energy-momentum tensor in a local quantum field theory is a tensor-valued operator-valued distribution whose conserved currents generate translations. For a symmetric conserved tensor T_(munu) and virial field V_mu, a conserved dilation current has the form

 D_mu=x^nuT_(munu)-V_mu,

with trace identity T^mu_mu=partial^muV_mu. In dimension 4, a local scalar L with partial^muV_mu=□L gives the traceless improvement

 t_(munu)=T_(munu)+1/3(partial_mupartial_nu-eta_(munu)□)L.

The improvement must belong to the same physical field algebra and preserve the relevant charges.
