Stable Homotopy Group

A stable homotopy group of a based space X is the direct limit of the homotopy groups of its iterated reduced suspensions:

 pi_k^s(X)=colim_jpi_(k+j)(Sigma^jX).

The transition maps are suspension homomorphisms. These are the homotopy groups of the suspension spectrum of X. For X=S^0 they give the stable homotopy groups pi_k^S of spheres, equivalently those of the sphere spectrum. For example, pi_0^S=Z. Adams spectral sequences and Morava K-theory localizations are tools for investigating these groups.
