Smash Product

The smash product of based spaces X and Y is the quotient

 X ^ Y=(X×Y)/(X v Y),

where the wedge is the union of X×{y_0} and {x_0}×Y. For example, S^a ^ S^b is homeomorphic to S^(a+b). The derived smash product of spectra extends this operation to stable homotopy theory and has the sphere spectrum as its unit. For a spectrum E, generalized homology is E_k(X)=pi_k(E ^ X). In a localized category the tensor product may require localization after the smash product.

Complex cobordism can detect stable vanishing after taking large smash powers.
