Bousfield Localization

Bousfield localization of a spectrum X with respect to a spectrum E is a map X->L_EX inducing an isomorphism on E homology and having an E-local target. A target is E-local when maps to it from every E-acyclic spectrum vanish in every shift. An E-acyclic spectrum A satisfies E ^ A=0. The localization map is universal for maps from X to local spectra.

In chromatic homotopy theory, L_(K(n)) denotes localization at Morava K-theory and L_n denotes localization at the Johnson-Wilson spectrum E(n). The latter has the same acyclics as the sum of K(0) through K(n). Thus L_0 is rationalization. The overlap L_(n-1)L_(K(n))S_p^ ^ is the object in chromatic splitting questions.
