Root Extraction

Root extraction is the operation of taking an nth root of a number.

A mental method recovers a two-digit positive integer m from its fifth power N=m^5 (Numberphile 2014). In decimal notation, the final decimal digit of N equals that of m because m^5=m (mod 10). This congruence follows from Fermat's little theorem modulo 5 together with the fact that m^5 and m have the same parity. To recover the tens digit t, compare N with the fifth powers of 10, 20, ..., 100 and choose the unique t=1, 2, ..., 9 for which (10t)^5<=N<(10(t+1))^5. The positive fifth root is then

 m=10t+(Nmod10),

where Nmod10 is the least nonnegative remainder when N is divided by 10.
