Projective Resolution

A projective resolution of a module V over a unit ring R is an exact sequence

 ...->P_2->P_1->P_0->V->0,

in which each P_i is a projective module (Brown 1982). The projective dimension is the least length of such a resolution, allowing infinity. Applying a covariant additive functor from the category of R-modules to an Abelian category to a projective resolution provides a way to compute its left derived functors. For example, 0->Z->^(×m)Z->Z/mZ->0 is a projective resolution over Z for every integer m>=2.
