Projection Constant

A projection constant lambda(Y,X), in its relative form, measures the smallest operator norm of a bounded linear projection from a normed space X onto a linear subspace Y:

 lambda(Y,X)=inf{||P||:P:X->Y, P(y)=y for all y in Y}.

In a Hilbert space, orthogonal projections onto nonzero closed subspaces have norm 1. General normed spaces need not have norm-one projections onto their hyperplanes.

Kobos (2026) proved that there is a universal constant c>1 such that, for every integer n>=3, some n-dimensional real normed space X satisfies lambda(Y,X)>=c for every hyperplane Y. More generally, for each fixed k>=1 there is c_k>1 such that every n>=k+2 admits such an X for all subspaces of codimension from 1 through k. The constants do not depend on n, but the argument gives no explicit numerical values.

Kobos (2026) acknowledges Microsoft Copilot discussions concerning mathematical aspects, while stating that the essential mathematical ideas were not AI-generated.
