Projection Body

The projection body PiK of a convex body K subset R^n, for n>=2, is the convex body symmetric about the origin whose convex body support function satisfies

 h_(PiK)(u)=vol_(n-1)(pi_(u^_|_)K),
(1)

where u is a unit vector and pi_(u^_|_) is orthogonal projection onto the hyperplane perpendicular to u. Thus its defining function records the volumes of the shadows of K (Saroglou and Zvavitch 2017).

For the unit ball B_2^n, the projection body is

 PiB_2^n=kappa_(n-1)B_2^n,
(2)

where kappa_j is the volume of B_2^j. The normalized projection volume

 R_n(K)=(vol_n(PiK))/(vol_n(K)^(n-1))
(3)

is invariant under invertible affine transformations. Petty's projection-volume conjecture proposes that ellipsoids minimize this quantity. Brannen's conjecture proposes that simplices maximize it. These statements concern the projection body's volume, rather than the volume of its polar body.
