Pólya Urn

A Pólya urn is a sampling model with reinforcement. In the classical two-color version, an urn initially contains a red and b black balls, where a and b are positive integers. At each step, a ball is chosen uniformly from the urn, returned, and accompanied by c additional balls of the same color, where c is a fixed positive integer. The successive colors form a stochastic process (Siegrist).

Let K_n be the number of red draws among the first n draws, where n is a nonnegative integer. The conditional probability of red on the next draw is

 P(red on draw n+1|K_n=k)=(a+ck)/(a+b+cn).

The probability mass function of K_n is

 P(K_n=k)=(n; k)(B(k+a/c,n-k+b/c))/(B(a/c,b/c))

for integer k with 0<=k<=n, where B is the beta function and (n; k) is a binomial coefficient. This is the beta binomial distribution with parameters n, a/c, and b/c (Siegrist).

The probability of any specified color sequence depends only on its numbers of red and black draws, not their order. Multiplying the successive conditional probabilities gives one factor a+jc for each red draw and one factor b+jc for each black draw, where j counts preceding draws of that color. Consequently, when a=b=c, K_n has a discrete uniform distribution on 0, 1, ..., n (Siegrist).
