Monomial Ideal

A monomial ideal in a polynomial ring k[x_1,...,x_n] is an ideal generated by monomials. Membership of a monomial is equivalent to divisibility by one of the generating monomials. The monomials outside the monomial ideal give a vector basis of the quotient ring as a vector space over the field k (Bruns and Herzog 1998).

For example, the ideal I=<x^2,xy,y^3> subset= k[x,y] has quotient vector basis 1,x,y,y^2, so the Hilbert series of k[x,y]/I is 1+2t+t^2. Every monomial ideal is a homogeneous ideal for the grading by total degree. The lex-plus-powers ideal imposes a particular order condition on its monomials.
