Lex-Plus-Powers Ideal

A lex-plus-powers ideal for integers 2<=a_1<=...<=a_c in the polynomial ring S=k[x_1,...,x_n], over a field k, with 1<=c<=n, is a monomial ideal J containing P=<x_1^(a_1),...,x_c^(a_c)> such that, in each total degree, its monomials outside P form an initial segment of the decreasing lexicographic order with x_1>...>x_n. Thus, whenever u in J\P, every lexicographically larger monomial of the same total degree outside P also belongs to J. The Hilbert function of S/J fixes the size of each segment and therefore determines J for the prescribed powers.

For example, J=<x^2,xy,y^3> is lex-plus-powers for P=<x^2,y^3> and x>y. In total degree 2, the available monomials are xy>y^2, and J contains the first of these. Its quotient Hilbert function has values 1, 2, 1, 0, ....
