Mass-Action System

A mass-action system is a polynomial ordinary differential equation associated with a reaction network, in which the flux of each reaction is proportional to the monomial of its source complex (Boros and Hofbauer 2020). For positive rate constants k_(y->y^'), its equation is

 x^.=sum_(y->y^')k_(y->y^')x^y(y^'-y),

where x^y=product_(i=1)^(d)x_i^(y_i) and x_i>0 is the ith concentration. The stoichiometric subspace S contains this vector field, and the positive compatibility class of x^0 is P=(x^0+S) intersection R_(>0)^d. For AB with forward rate a and reverse rate b, the equations are x^._1=-ax_1+bx_2 and x^._2=ax_1-bx_2.

A global positive trajectory is persistent when

 liminf_(t->infty)x_i(t)>0,

for every species i. The system is permanent on P when one compact set K_P subset P eventually contains every positive trajectory in the class. The entry time may depend on the initial state.
