J-Homomorphism

The J-homomorphism is a group homomorphism from homotopy groups of the orthogonal group O(n) to homotopy groups of a hypersphere,

 J_n:pi_i(O(n))->pi_(n+i)(S^n),

where n and i are positive integers.

To define it, write D^m for the closed unit ball in Euclidean space R^m and represent a class by a continuous map f:S^i->O(n) taking the basepoint to the identity element. On partial(D^(i+1)×D^n), the map (x,y)|->f(x)y on S^i×D^n, together with collapse of D^(i+1)×S^(n-1) to the basepoint, defines a map to D^n/partialD^n=S^n. Its homotopy class is J_n([f]) (Hatcher 2017, p. 108).

These group homomorphisms are compatible with stabilization and give the stable J-homomorphism

 J:pi_i(O)->pi_i^S,

where O is the union of the orthogonal groups under the inclusions A|->diag(A,1) and pi_i^S is the stable homotopy group of spheres in degree i (Hatcher 2017, p. 109).
