Iterated Matrix Multiplication

Iterated matrix multiplication is the polynomial obtained by taking a specified entry of a product of matrices whose entries are distinct commuting variables. For d matrices X^((1)), ..., X^((d)) of size w×w, write

 IMM_(w,d)=(X^((1))...X^((d)))_(1,1).

It is homogeneous of total degree d, in dw^2 ambient variables, including entries absent from the polynomial. For d=2, it is sum_(j=1)^(w)x_(1,j)^((1))x_(j,1)^((2)). Matrix multiplication gives polynomial-size arithmetic circuits without a depth restriction.
