Heat Trace

The heat trace of a nonnegative self-adjoint operator A on a Hilbert space is the operator trace

 Z_A(t)=Tr(e^(-tA))
(1)

for t>0 such that e^(-tA) is a trace-class operator. When A has a complete orthonormal basis of eigenvectors with eigenvalues lambda_1, lambda_2, ..., counted with multiplicity, this is

 Z_A(t)=sum_(j=1)^inftye^(-tlambda_j).
(2)

For the Laplacian del ^2 on a bounded region Omega subset R^d with smooth boundary and Dirichlet boundary conditions, take A=-del ^2 so that its eigenvalues are positive. The sum then converges for every t>0 (Vassilevich 2003).

For d=3, the asymptotic expansion as t->0^+ is

 Z_A(t)=1/((4pit)^(3/2))[V-(sqrt(pi))/2St^(1/2)+2/3Ct+O(t^(3/2))],
(3)

where V is the volume, S is the surface area of the boundary, and C=int_(partialOmega)HdS is its integrated mean curvature. Here H=(kappa_1+kappa_2)/2, with principal curvatures chosen positive on a sphere (Branson and Gilkey 1990, Vassilevich 2003). Consequently these three geometric quantities are determined by the full sequence of eigenvalues, including multiplicities. The leading coefficient agrees with Weyl's law, while the additional coefficients describe geometric information beyond the leading growth of the counting function.
