Gao Constant

The Gao constant E(G) of a finite group G is the least integer l such that every sequence of l elements of G contains |G| terms that can be reordered to have product equal to the identity element. Repetitions are allowed, and the selected terms need not be consecutive (Qu 2026). The required subsequence length is the group order, not the group exponent.

For a cyclic group of order n, the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem gives E(G)=2n-1. Qu (2026) proved that every finite noncyclic group satisfies

 E(G)<=|G|+(|G|)/p+p-2,

where p is the least prime divisor of |G|. Equality holds iff G has a subgroup that is cyclic and has subgroup index p. If no such subgroup exists, the stronger bound E(G)<=|G|+|G|/p-1 holds.

Qu (2026) reports AI assistance with proofs involving finite simple groups.
