Amalgamated Free Product

An amalgamated free product of groups A and B over a group J, with specified injective homomorphisms i_A:J->A and i_B:J->B, is the quotient

 A*_JB=(A*B)/<<i_A(j)i_B(j)^(-1):j in J>>.

The denominator is the normal closure, so the two copies of each element of J are identified. The canonical maps from A and B into this quotient are injective (Brown 1982). For trivial J it reduces to the free product. The construction supplies the ambient group in the fixed price problem.
