Witt Vector

A p-typical Witt vector over a commutative ring R is a sequence (a_0,a_1,...) with addition and multiplication specified by universal integer polynomials through the ghost components

 w_n(a)=sum_(i=0)^np^ia_i^(p^(n-i)).

The operations make every ghost component a ring homomorphism. They are defined by these universal polynomials even when the ghost map is not injective in R. For a perfect field k of characteristic p, the Witt vector ring W(k) is a complete discrete valuation ring of characteristic zero, with residue field k and uniformizer p. For example, W(F_p)=Z_p. Integral Donovan finiteness uses W(F^__p) as its fixed coefficient ring.
