Uniformizer

A uniformizer pi of a discrete valuation ring R is an element such that (pi)=m, where m is the unique maximal ideal of R. Equivalently, for the associated normalized discrete valuation v on the field of fractions of R, it satisfies v(pi)=1 (Milne 2020, pp. 46, 55-56).

Any two uniformizers differ by multiplication by a ring unit. Every nonzero element of R can be written uniquely as upi^n, where u is a ring unit and n is a nonnegative integer (Milne 2020, p. 46).
