In classical algebraic geometry , a trope is a special tangent plane to an algebraic
surface . In particular, a trope of a quartic surface
is a plane tangent to the surface along a conic section .
The conic section itself is sometimes called a trope
conic.
The 16 nodes and 16 tropes of a 16-nodal Kummer surface
form the Kummer configuration .
