Tokareva's Conjecture

Tokareva's conjecture states that, for every even positive integer n, every Boolean function f:F_2^n->F_2 of polynomial degree at most n/2 is the sum of two bent functions, with addition in the finite field F_2 (Tokareva 2014). The degree is that of the unique multilinear polynomial representing f. The conjecture holds for n<=6 but fails for every even n>=8 (Feng et al. 2026).

Feng et al. (2026) gave the explicit counterexamples

 f_n(x)=x_1...x_(m-2)(x_(m-1)x_m+x_(m+1)x_(m+2)+x_(m+3)x_(m+4)),

where n=2m>=8. These functions have degree m and cannot be expressed as sums of two bent functions. In particular, the first counterexample is f_8=x_1x_2(x_3x_4+x_5x_6+x_7x_8).

Feng et al. (2026) also gave explicit counterexamples to a derivative formulation. For every even n>=10, the function h_n(x)=x_2+f_(n-2)(x_3,...,x_n) is balanced, has degree n/2-1, and has a nonzero period, but is not a derivative of any bent function in any direction. Here balanced means taking each value in F_2 equally often; a nonzero period is a vector a!=0 satisfying h_n(x+a)=h_n(x); and the derivative of g in direction a is D_ag(x)=g(x+a)+g(x). Nonconstructive counterexamples to this derivative formulation were already known (Feng et al. 2026).

Feng et al. (2026) report that MiniMax M3.1-Flash-Preview agents discovered the counterexamples and generated proofs. The authors checked the arguments and report accompanying Lean 4 formalizations of both counterexample theorems.
