Thorp Shuffle

The Thorp shuffle is a random permutation of n=2^d card positions defined by independent fair switches between paired binary addresses. For an address (x_1,...,x_d) in {0,1}^d, one physical shuffle sends it to

 (x_2,...,x_d,x_1 direct sum xi_(x_2,...,x_d)),

where direct sum is exclusive or and the switch coins xi are independent fair bits for the 2^(d-1) suffixes. The same coin acts on both addresses in each pair, making the map a permutation. After d physical shuffles, one coordinate sweep has visited each binary direction once. The stationary distribution on the full symmetric group S_n is uniform.

A support bound gives

 d_(TV)(mu_t,U_(S_n))>=1-(2^(tn/2))/(n!).

Indeed, t physical shuffles use tn/2 fair bits, so at most 2^(tn/2) permutations are attainable from a fixed deck. At threshold 1/4, this yields a lower bound 2d-O(1) for the mixing time.
