Partial Trace

The partial trace over a finite-dimensional Hilbert-space factor B maps an operator on A tensor B to an operator on A by tracing only the B indices, where A is also finite-dimensional. In finite dimensions, for an orthonormal basis (e_j) of B, it is

 Tr_BX=sum_(j)(I_A tensor <e_j|)X(I_A tensor |e_j>).

This definition is independent of the chosen orthonormal basis. For a joint density matrix, the partial trace is the reduced density matrix of subsystem A. It preserves the trace and positivity (Watrous 2011, Example 2.2). For X=X_A tensor X_B, it gives X_ATrX_B. Reduced density matrices define entanglement entropy and one-particle occupation numbers.
