Group Equation

A group equation over a group G is an equation w=1 with w in the free product G*F_n, where F_n is the free group on the unknowns x_1, ..., x_n. A solution in an overgroup substitutes elements for the unknowns in a group containing an isomorphic copy of G, with the given coefficients retained. The quotient

 Q=(G*F_n)/<<w_1,...,w_m>>,

where the denominator is the normal closure, is the universal group imposing a finite system. The coefficient map G->Q is injective iff the system has a solution in some overgroup. Solutions need not exist in G itself.

The exponent-sum matrix has one row for each word w_i and one column for each unknown. Its (i,j) entry is the total exponent of x_j in w_i. The system is nonsingular when this integer matrix has full row matrix rank over Q. For example, x^2=g is nonsingular, even when this equation has no solution in G. The Howie conjecture concerns solvability of nonsingular systems in overgroups.
