Metric Embedding Distortion

The metric embedding distortion of an injective function f:X->Y between metric spaces is the infimum of the constants D>=1 for which some s>0 satisfies

 sd_X(x,y)<=d_Y(f(x),f(y))<=Dsd_X(x,y)

for all x,y in X. Here, d_X and d_Y are the respective metrics. This normalization permits a common rescaling of all distances. A scaled isometry has distortion 1.

Graph metrics provide finite metric spaces whose embeddings into L1 are studied with a uniform distortion bound.
