Dimension Reduction

Dimension reduction in metric geometry represents a finite collection of points in a space of smaller dimension while controlling their distances. The permitted error is measured by metric embedding distortion. The representing function need not be a linear transformation.

For 1<p<infty, integer n>=2, and D>=1, let d_p(n,D) be the least coordinate dimension in which every n-point subset of any real Lp-space can be represented with metric embedding distortion at most D. The target is l_p^d, with norm ||x||_p=(sum_(i=1)^(d)|x_i|^p)^(1/p).
