Matrix Ring

A matrix ring M_n(R) is the ring of all n×n matrices with entries in a ring R, using matrix addition and matrix multiplication. If R has a multiplicative identity, the identity matrix is the identity of M_n(R). For n>=2 and nonzero R with identity, M_n(R) is noncommutative even when R is commutative (Lam 2001).

When R has a multiplicative identity, the ring center of M_n(R) consists of the scalar matrices aI_n with a in the ring center of R. The commuting graph of a noncommutative matrix ring records the pairs of noncentral matrices that commute with each other.
