Ring Center

The ring center Z(R) of a ring R is the subring of elements that commute with every element of R. Thus

 Z(R)={a in R:ar=ra for every r in R}.

A ring is commutative iff Z(R)=R. The center of the matrix ring M_n(R) over a ring with identity consists of scalar matrices aI_n with a in Z(R) (Lam 2001).

The commuting graph of a noncommutative ring omits its central elements, since each would be adjacent to every other graph vertex.
